THE COMBINED ACTION OF PENICILLIN AND THE SULFONAMIDES IN VITRO: THE NATURE OF THE REACTION' MORTON KLEIN AND SEYMOUR S. KALTER Department of Bacteriology, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Received for publication September 12, 1945 The combined action of penicillin and the sulfonamides against bacteria has been demonstrated by several workers. Ungar 1943 ; reported that penicillin and sulfapyridine showed a marked additive effect both in vitro and in vivo against Staphylococcus aureus and hemolytic streptococci. Soo-Hoo and Schnitzer 1944 ; reported the additive effect of penicillin when combined with sulfanilamide or sulfapyridine against streptococci. Kirby 1944 ; using sulfadiazine and Bigger 1944 ; using sulfathiazole found that these compounds when combined with penicillin showed an additive effect against staphylococci and streptococci. T'ung 1944 ; found the in vitro sulfathiazole-penicillin combination more efficient than either compound alone when tested against several strains of Brucella. Hobby and Dawson 1944a ; found a slight additive effect with sulfapyridine and none with sulfadiazine when these agents were combined with penicillin and tested against staphylococci and streptococci. They also reported that the rate of penicillin activity was reduced when small amounts of the sulfonamides were added. In the present paper we will report on the ability of three sulfonamides sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, and sulfapyrazine ; to increase the activity of penicillin against ten sulfonamide-susceptible and sulfonamide-resistant strains of S. aureus and eight gram-negative rods. Observations indicating the mechanism of the in vitro additive effect are included in our experimental data.
Summer is a great time to clean out the garage, basement, attic or anywhere else in your home or office and turn that clutter into cold, hard cash. On August 5 and 6, The Senior Center Organization of The Hancock County Agency on Aging will host a Flea Market and Community Garage Sale. The event will be held rain or shine at The Senior Center located at 423 Trenton Avenue in Findlay. Booth space will be available in the Agency parking lot and inside the air-conditioned Center. Our flea market community garage sale is a great opportunity for profiting from all that stuff you no longer need or use. This type event generates a lot of shopper traffic, so it's a great opportunity for local non-profit organizations to raise extra funds. Vendor space is available to individuals, businesses and organizations. Space rental fees are very reasonable and all sales proceeds go to you or your organization. Don't want to be bothered with manning a booth, but have stuff you'd like to get out of the house? The Agency will have space available for people with items they wish to donate for sale with the proceeds to benefit the activities and programs of the Senior Center. Call Betty or Leni if you are interested in donating items for sale to benefit the Senior Center. Spaces will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis. Payment is required to confirm space. Early bird booth rates are available through July 15. For booth rates and additional information, contact Betty Rozelle at 419-423-8496.
Sulfadiazine 1%
Simultaneously affecting two properties, is not unique. Recent reports have documented the concurrent appearance of resistance to aminopterin and a specific sensitivity 34 ; , and of resistance to other inhibitors of dihydrofolate reductase concurrently with nutritional requirements for certain end products of biosyntheses involving tetrahydrofolate-containing coenzymes 35 ; . As selective agent for auxotropic mutants of Neisseria, sulfadiazine appears to be quite specific for spontaneous mutations which affect the particular locus corresponding to metF of Salmonella 36 ; . This locus of Neisseria was revealed to be complex, having a number of sites which undergo recombination. Additional evidence that the number of sites is large is provided by results of transformation tests to be described elsewhere ; with 89 Sul-r Met- spontaneous mutants. These were used as recipients in two-point crosses with six DNA preparations Table 4 ; from Sul-r Metmutants; the transformation patterns indicated that not more than 3 of the 89 were possibly the same as any of the 6 DNA donor mutants. This met locus is of considerable interest, therefore, because it promises to be a powerful tool for study of genetic fine structure of members of Neisseria, and of genetic homology. The data presented here Tables 4 and 5 ; , furthermore, reveal a correspondence of metF loci of N. meningitidis, N. gonorrhoeae, and N. perflava.

Dear New Pathways, I was sorry to hear about Maureen's distressing, shaking symptoms. It sounds like Ataxia, which can be caused by a lesion to the Cerebellum - the area near the back of the brain, which deals with balance and co-ordination. Ataxia can be helped by compressing the joints; this stimulates the muscles to stabilise, rather than shake. If the Ataxia, starts in the neck and then spreads down the arms, applying downward pressure to the head when it first starts may "nip it in the bud". The easiest way to do this is for you to sit straight in a 'chair' looking straight ahead, while your husband pushes straight down on your head - gently but firmly. The pressure must be straight down or it may hurt your neck and it may be wise to check with your GP that this will not make worse any joint problems that you have in your neck. I hope this helps Yours sincerely Karen Bodani ; Senior Physiotherapist, Newcastle and sulfinpyrazone.

Athymic nude mice were infected with 10 cysts of the ME49 strain perorally and were treated with sulfadiazine for 3 weeks, beginning 7 days after infection. Nine and 2 days before the discontinuation of sulfadiazine treatment, mice received an intravenous injection of 107 immune T cells from infected wild-type or PO mice see Materials and Methods ; . Developed by Dr. Charles Fox of Columbia University, a silver compound known as silver sulfadiazine is used in 70 percent of burn centers in the U.S. It also stops the herpes virus responsible for cold sores and fever blisters. With silver sulfadiazine, Dr Fox scored what properly is acclaimed as a momentous breakthrough, for it was the first new silver compound to win FDA approval and become generally available. A pharmaceutical house, Marion Laboratories, is offering it as an ointment, under the brand name of Silvadene; other companies are making silver sulfadiazine available in several countries from Canada to India. Doctors are reporting that, taken internally, the compound works against three scourges - syphilis and symlin.
Silver sulfadiazine should only be used in badly burned pregnant women if the benefit to the patient outweighs the risk to the fetus.
Into account their well-established stimulatory action on LH release Fig. 3A, inset ; . Pretreatment of pituitary cells with the PKC inhibitor GF109203X 2 M ; had no influence on both the basal as well as PACAP induced levels of NOS I Fig. 4 ; , which was coherent with and reinforced, the absence of an effect with TPA on NOS I induction. A similar lack of influence of the MAPK cascade was observed with the MAPK inhibitor PD98059 20 M ; . contrast, the PACAP action on NOS I was quasi-totally abolished by H89, a potent inhibitor of PKA that acted via a competitive interaction at the ATP-binding site 50 ; . The concentration-dependence of H89 effects is further depicted in Fig. 5. As mentioned above Fig. 3A ; A23187 had no effect on NOS I synthesis, however, the addition of EGTA resulted in a partial 50 % ; reduction in the stimulation of NOS I levels by PACAP Fig. 4 ; , suggesting an involvement of extracellular Ca2 + in the mechanism of PACAP action. This was at variance with LH release that was induced by A23187 in the absence of PACAP Fig. 3A, inset ; , and strongly inhibited by EGTA in the presence of PACAP Fig. 4, inset ; . The PACAP-induced LH release was also inhibited to various degrees by GF109203X and H89 insets of Fig. 4 and 5 ; illustrative of the complex contribution of the PKC and PKA pathways in mediating the releasing action of PACAP within gonadotrophs. These data suggested a and symmetrel.
