On Oct. 19, Twist & Bid Again 2001 celebrated 10 years of providing medications to some of Kentucky's most vulnerable citizens. The 2001 event broke fundraising records by raising more than 1, 000. The black-tie dance and auction is the primary fundraising source for Health Kentucky's programs and services, which provide uninsured Kentuckians with access to health care at no charge. The event took place at Marriott's Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington. Twist & Bid Again 2001 recognized several major pharmaceutical companies that have forged a partnership with Health Kentucky to provide medications to thousands of uninsured Kentuckians across the state. In the last decade, these pharmaceutical manufacturers have donated more than 150, 000 prescriptions to Kentucky citizens. In 1990, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals became the first company to provide its medications through Health Kentucky. Johnson & Johnson and Abbott Laboratories followed in 1992, Parke-Davis in 1998, Searle in 2000 and Eli Lilly in 2001. Gov. Paul Patton proclaimed Oct. 19, 2001, as Kentucky Pharmacy Providers Program Day. The proclamation recognized the pharmaceutical companies that have contributed to the care of Kentuckians without health insurance through the statewide Health Kentucky program since 1990. Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet Mike Haydon presented the proclamations to representatives of the pharmaceutical industry at a special reception prior to the annual fundraising gala. "Health Kentucky depends heavily on the pharmaceutical industry to provide the prescription drugs needed by individuals who can't afford health insurance, " said Dr. William P. McElwain, president of the Health Kentucky Board of Directors. "Our ability to coordinate access to care for the uninsured doesn't end with a free visit to a doctor or hospital. If these patients don't receive the medications they need, our other efforts are often in vain. The pharmaceutical companies that offer this service are a critical part of our healthcare network, and we're pleased that Gov. Patton's proclamation gives their generosity the recognition it deserves.

Other widely used treatments for osteoarthritis include methylsulfonylmethane, ginger extract, avocado soybean unsaponifiables, and S-adenosylmethionine. Preliminary evidence suggests that some nondrug agents may play a role in disease-modification in addition to decreasing osteoarthritis-associated pain.
